Il a grandit à St-Ann, la même commune qui a vu naître Bob Marley. C’est ce dernier qui l’introduira chez Studio 1 où il sort son premier single « Door peep » en 1969. Il enregistrera ses deux premiers albums : « Burning Spear » & « Rocking Time ». Suit dans les années 70 son époque Island recors, maison de disque qu’il rejoint et qui le verra sortir ses albums : Marcus Garvey, Man in the Hills, et Garvey’s Ghost. Ces derniers vont faire le tour du monde et installer le Spear comme un des artistes reggae internationaux majeurs. Il rejoindra la maison de disque EMI où il sortira « Hail H.I.M. ». Les années 80 et 90 le verront sortir un grand nombre d’album, mais celui qui couronnera sa carrière avec un Grammy Awards en 1999 fut « Calling rastafari »! ! !
